Creating stacks for applications 10.5 Leopard

Votes: 948

Update as of 10/29/07

I had to add an extra step, This guide was originally written for the WWDC 07 Beta

Making stacks is easy right?  Well mostly, I found it easy to make them, but the trick was making ones I wanted, and useful stacks as well.  I wanted to group applications together, like the Adobe Suite, and others, so here is a quick guide on doing just that.

Find the applications

APPLE+CLICK to select multiple items, I used the tree vieing mode to see them all.  The Adobe Suite was tricky like that. Now CTRL+CLICK and make aliases, we'' be putting those in a folder on the next step.

Prepare for the Stacking to begin

In the final version of Leopard, you can't just drag a group of programs into the dock to make a stack, it wants a folder.  No problem there, we can fix that, just make a folder in your applications folder and call it CS3 or whatever, then  clean up the aliases by removing the alias part of the filenames.

Make it stack!

Drag that folder into the dock, I have not yet found how to give the stack an "Icon".  If anyone knows post it in the comments.

If anyone knows a better way, PLEASE SHARE!

Happy stacking!

Stacks on Leopard

And for Ed Rios doing it this way will keep the stacks on the dock regardless whether you reboot or not. If you keep experiencing this then you can always go in the Preferences folder in your Library directory and erase the com.apple. file for the dock. It will reset the dock to the original one that ships with OS X 10.5.

Just command click on the applications and move them to an already made "iLife 08" folder and then move the folder the stack area and it will look native withouth the alias arrows.

Issue after restart
Reply #12 on : Sun April 06, 2008, 10:27:49
This works great, but after every restart I'm left with the original dock and no stacks. I have to manually reinsert them each time. Any ideas on why that is? I've tried everything I can think of, but the dock just isn't holding any settings!

to add an icon to the folder...
• "get info" on the folder (command+i). A new window pops up.
• Select the icon image (the default is the folder image)
• While it is "selected" (hi-lighted), paste (command+v) the picture you want to replace it with from the clipboard
• I don't know the image size & file format limitations but it works with small jpegs

You can use these drawer icons by copying one over and using the terminal to change the date on the icon

Create your own CS styled drawer icon by using this tutorial here:

To use an icon for the stack you need to insert a step after creating the folder for the applications or whatever you wish.

custom Icons for stackfolders
Reply #7 on : Sun November 04, 2007, 06:31:08
step 1 Create a stackfolder and name it whatever you like.
step2: Inside that folder create an other folder and rename it by just hitting the spacebar once.
step 3: Choose a folder or app of your choice, mouseclick it once with Cmd-i. The info window will open.
Step 4: Click the icon once and do Cmd-C.
step 5: Click the 'nameless' folder you created inside the stackfolder once and hit Cmd-i
step 6: Mouseclick the icon once and do Cmd-V. It will replace the standard Icon with the icon you just copied.
step 7: Close the info window.
step 8: Drag your Stack folder to the dock and look what happens: No more changing Icons just the icon of your choice!

The only thing you have to remember is to set 'Sort to date'
It's exactly like in the good old OS 9 days: just copy and paste!
