Secure Your Data on a Mac Laptop

Votes: 549

If you're like anyone I know, you have sensitive data one your laptop, or even your normal computer, do you have a plan if it's stolen?  I didn't until a few days ago, and I have loads of sensitive data.  In this guide I'll explain what I did, and how you can too!

Disclaimer: This is a mac guide, the same concepts may apply for other OS's.

Setup the disk

Use the Disk utility to create a new disk image, with these settings.

Adjust the size to for your needs.

Makue sure the encryption is on, and then create the disk.

To keep the data secure from "laptop snatchers" uncheck the remember password. What good is a secure encrypted disk if the password is on the keychain?

Make it auto mount

I then copied all my important sensitive data to the drive, however I use this stuff everyday!  So I need it to mount when I login, and the easiest way to do that is to drag the disk image (not the mounted drive) into your login items pane inside system preferences.

Easy as pie... mmmm pie...

Then when you login, you'll be prompted to authenticate the image, and you're good to go!
